TWO Aberystwyth brothers have admitted assaulting a man outside the town’s McDonald’s restaurant in an attack which left him unconscious.
Leigh Ward, aged 20, and Connor Ward, 18, both of 17 Cae Job in Penparcau admitted unlawfully wounding Philip James Brown on 29 July in an attack that left Mr Brown with amnesia of the incident after he was knocked out. They had both initially denied the offence.
Connor Ward also admitted affray on the same day, although Leigh Ward denied that charge.
Both brothers also pleaded not guilty to unlawfully wounding another man, Dean Phillips, on the same occasion. Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said the pleas were acceptable and Judge Geraint Walters entered formal verdicts of not guilty to the charges both men had denied.
Both will now be sentenced on 22 September after probation officers have prepared reports into their backgrounds.
Mr Brown was left unconscious following the attack which took place in front of children and families who were eating in the restaurant at the time.
He had previously had a piece of his skull removed following a growth on his brain and magistrates at an initial hearing about the case heard that Mr Brown had been hit on that same part of his head which could have caused even greater injuries. During the assault Mr Brown also suffered a cut to his left eyebrow and had suffered memory loss after the incident.
Mr Brown was part of a group of three men from the Caersws area who had been in Aberystwyth to play golf before going to the McDonalds restaurant at Parc y Llyn.
In a Facebook post, Mr Brown’s wife Nicci said her husband had been “attacked from behind” and “stamped and kicked like a football” in the attack.
Leigh Ward, who is currently serving a prison sentence for earlier offences, was remanded in custody until the sentencing hearing on 22 September, while Connor Ward was granted bail.
