THE county council is under pressure to reveal what happened to dozens of dogs left in the possession of an illegal dog breeder after his conviction for causing suffering to 21 dogs.

Richard Samuel Morgan Jones, 31, of Moelfre, Llanwnnen, who was sentenced to nine weeks in prison last month, suspended for 18 months, and banned from keeping dogs for four years, was allowed to keep 113 dogs after council officers raided two of his premises last June, despite animals being found in “appalling and inexcusable” conditions.

During sentencing last month, it was revealed that Jones was still in possession of 38 dogs — 31 adult dogs and two litters of puppies.

Although Jones was not asked what had happened to the remaining 75 dogs, his defence counsel Matthew Paul said his client had “disposed of” them correctly, sparking concern from animal welfare campaigners.

And a council statement issued last week seems to have done little to allay these concerns, only saying that it had “received assurances” that “suitable arrangements” had been made.

The statement, posted on the council’s Facebook page last Tuesday, read: “We would like to assure those who are concerned that the animals have received all appropriate veterinary treatment to ensure their health and welfare.

“The council’s most recent inspection of the premises showed a significant improvement in the dogs’ welfare.

“The council has received assurances that suitable arrangements have been made in relation to the dogs that are no longer at the premises.”

The RSPCA confirmed this week that its offer of assistance to the council in investigating and prosecuting Jones was turned down, and called on the council to reveal what has happened to the remaining dogs.
