SEVERAL cars were found to be breaking the 20mph speed limit through Newcastle Emlyn’s Sycamore Street following a Dyfed-Powys Police speed initiative campaign set up in response to numerous complaints from residents.
Pc Kelly Williams said the aim was to educate drivers about the importance of sticking to the relevant limit.
“It is important that drivers understand that 20mph areas are there to improve safety, and that failure to keep within the limit puts children and other pedestrians at risk, and leaves drivers liable to prosecution,” she added.
“The stopping distance on a dry road and in good conditions at 30mph is 23 metres or six car lengths.
“At 20mph, this is reduced by half to just 12 metres or three car lengths, which demonstrates the importance of the 20mph limits.”
As a follow-up, the Roads Policing Unit, based in Cross Hands, will now be asked to visit the town to conduct enforcement activity, and those found to be continuing to exceed the limit will be issued with fines.
The 20mph speed limit through Sycamore Street was implemented around 12 months ago.
