A judge has postponed sentencing of a man who drove into a tent seriously injuring an Aberystwyth woman who later died – but has warned that a long jail sentence is inevitable.
Forty-six-year-old Anna Evans passed away on Tuesday, 27 August, in hospital in Stoke just over a week after she was hit by the car while camping on Monday, 19 August.
Jake Waterhouse, 26, of Hazel Walk, Partington in Manchester, had previously pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a hearing before Mrs Evans passed away.
He had also admitted several other charges.
On Monday, prosecutors were preparing to change the charge to causing death by dangerous driving, following Mrs Evans’ death.
Waterhouse’s barrister had indicated Waterhouse, 26, would plead guilty to that charge, but prosecutor Sion ap Mihangel said the Crown Prosecution Service had not yet received medical confirmation that the dangerous driving was the cause of Mrs Evans’ death.
Judge Rhys Rowlands said he had also only found out on the day of the hearing that Mrs Evans had passed away following the incident.
The judge said the lack of confirmation meant the case could not continue to sentencing at that time.
He adjourned sentencing in the case until 22 October at Mold Crown Court and warned Waterhouse that a prison sentence was inevitable.
He said: “I will reserve the matter to myself.
“There can be only one sentence in his case. It will be a custodial sentence – and one of some length.”
Mrs Evans had been at the Rhyd y Galen campsite near Caernarfon when she was struck by a car while sleeping in a tent.
There were a series of tributes paid to Mrs Evans including from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, where Mrs Evans worked, and from Aberystwyth Arts Centre where Mrs Evans had been working on arts projects.
Since then, a fundraising campaign has been launched in Mrs Evans’ name to launch the Anna Evans Community Arts Grant Scheme.
Mrs Evans was a talented artist who was involved in numerous art projects in Aberystwyth and family and friends wanted to launch the grant scheme to pay tribute to Mrs Evans and to help other artists continue their work in her name.
The fundraising target of £5,000 has already been exceeded with a JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/annaevans
