A WOMAN was punched in the face for laughing when England were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland, a court has heard.
The story emerged as Aberystwyth Magistrates Court heard the case of Claire Thomas of Maesycoed, Llanfarian, who pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers and resisting arrest.
During a hearing on Wednesday, the court heard that 28-year-old Thomas was drunk after being invited round to a friend’s house in Aberaeron to watch the Euro 2016 match on 27 June.
The court heard that when she “laughed” at England losing 2-1, she was punched by her male friend and received a bloody lip.
She did not complain to police about the incident and left.
The court was told that after Thomas left, her male friend, who was not named in court, rang the police to claim he had been assaulted.
When police officers arrived on scene, they found a “drunken” Thomas nearby staggering on the crutches she used following an incident that left her in a coma in April.
Upset about what she claimed had happened following her laughter at the football result, an “agitated” and “aggressive” Thomas lashed out at the two officers, PC 296 Damon Watmough and PS 419 Marc Davies.
She waved her crutches at them, threw her mobile phone, spat at them and scratched PS Davies deep enough to draw blood while officers were trying to arrest her, the court heard.
Aberystwyth magistrates heard that Thomas had, six days previously, received a suspended sentence for a similar offence, but defence solicitor Alun Lewis urged caution from the magistrates in triggering the suspended sentence in this case.
“She laughed when England got knocked out and her friend hit her in the face,” Mr Lewis told the court.
“That is what happened. She was understandably upset.”
Sentencing was adjourned for an all-options pre-sentence probation report to be produced.
