A Cardigan man is taking on the mammoth challenge of cycling to COP26, after another cyclist suffered an injury.
Michail Davies was due to complete an eight day cycle from his home in Mathry, stopping in Aberystwyth, in time for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, or COP26.
The summit will see leaders and delegates, from 197 countries, come together in Glasgow to accelerate action towards tackling climate change, from 31 October and 12 November.
However, due to an injury, Michail has now had to pull out of the challenge and will be replaced by Peter Weldon, 54, from Cwm Cou.
Peter will be leaving Cardigan on 27 October, with the hope of spending his first night in Machynlleth.
“The time for decisive action is overdue,” said Pete, “governments have a duty to protect the lives and wellbeing of their citizens. I will make this journey to show world leaders that we really care about the decisions that they will make.
“It really is not exaggerating to say that the decisions next month will shape the course of humanity’s future.”
Extinction Rebellion supporter and Velo Teifi cycling club treasurer Peter “hopes to engage with the public along the way to raise awareness of the COP summit and its importance”.
Peter will also be carrying a letter from Cardigan Town Council, “containing a message of hope from the people of Cardigan to the delegates at the international COP26 climate summit”.
On Saturday, 23 October, the letter will be handed over from the town council to Peter outside Guildhall, Cardigan, at 11.30am. Those who would like to show their support are welcome to attend.
The letter will ask the COP 26 delegates to commit to measures that will keep the world on a path to limit global warming to the 1.5°C aspiration agreed in Paris in 2015.
