A PORTHMADOG man with a debilitating condition is walking to Cardiff to raise funds for charity.
Phil Gloster is trekking 165 miles from his hometown to the capital to raise money and awareness for the Better Life Appeal, a charity which assists the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre at Llandough Hospital.
Phil, who works as part of the warehouse team at ethical children’s merchandiser Babi Pur in Penrhyndaedraeth, suffers with cystic fibrosis himself, a condition in which the lungs and digestive system can become clogged with thick mucus.
It can cause problems with breathing and digestion from a young age. Over many years, the lungs become increasingly damaged and may eventually stop working properly.
The 40-year-old, who has already completed several cycling fund-raisers, is determined to reach his goal though, having left Porthmadog last Friday and hoping to arrive today (8 September).
“This very personal challenge takes me from my couch at home in Porthmadog and finishes seven days later at my Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at Llandough Hospital, Cardiff.
“The walk be approximately 165 miles averaging around 24 miles a day. Life with Cystic Fibrosis can be hard work, day-to-day I take many tablets, inhalers and try to nebulise and do physio daily. I work nearly 40 hours a week in an active warehouse job which helps keep me fit."
Phil is raising money for a cause very close to his heart however.
“The centre I attend aims to provide its patients with the best possible care, support, advice and encouragement to meet the needs of each individual and their families who are affected by this life-long disease."
Glosters in Porthmadog, the Ardudwy Knights and Babi Pur are all supporting Phil’s endeavours and conducting their own fund-raisers.
But it is the support of Phil’s family and friends which gives him strength.
“None of this would not be possible without the love and care I receive from a wonderfully loving and supportive family by blood and marriage, the various CF clinics who have kept me ticking for 40 years and strong group of friends forged over many years."
