A 45-YEAR-OLD man has died after reportedly trying to rescue his son from the sea at Borth y Gest.

The man, who has not been named but is thought to be from Manchester, got into difficulty on Monday while trying to rescue the boy, and had to be pulled from the water by onlookers who attempted to resuscitate him.

He was flown to hospital in Bangor but sadly died later that evening.

It is understood the child, who was also pulled from the water, is recovering.

Emergency services were called to the scene and an inshore lifeboat was launched from Criccieth.

North Wales Police, the Welsh Ambulance Service and an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Just after 4pm, HM Coastguard received multiple 999 calls reporting a person in the water near Porthmadog.

“The Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI inshore lifeboat from Criccieth were sent, along with the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Caernarfon, North Wales Police and the Ambulance Service.

“The person was recovered from the water by members of the public before being transferred by helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor.”
