STORM Brian inflicted only “superficial” damage to Aberystwyth promenade, a top councillor has said.

Briefing Aberystwyth Town Council last week, Cllr Alun Williams, who is county council Cabinet member for carbon management, sustainability, transport and mental health, announced the town “fully open for business” following Storm Brian.

Cllr Williams said the new bandstand had “stood up very well” to the high tides and strong winds, with only minimal damage done to a small section of the prom.

He said: “The damage to the promenade has been superficial — only a 6x6m² section of promenade capping stones came up and some cobbles and paving stones were thrown up by the waves.

“A flag pole was blown down as well towards Castle Point. That is the full extent of the damage in Aberystwyth.

“Aberystwyth remains fully open for business.

“One bit of good news is that the bandstand has stood up very well to the storms. It is slightly raised from the rest of the prom and has concave wave return walls on it.

“It stood up to that test very successfully.”

Cllr Mark Strong added: “I had a walk along the promenade today (Monday) and some of the flower beds have been damaged but that is superficial.”
