Madam,

Thank you for your excellent coverage about the danger of the east end of Cwm Maethlon/Happy Valley road (‘Narrow lane a death trap says granddad’, last week’s Cambrian News). Bollards are now being put in place but I don’t know how effective they’ll be at preventing a fatality, particularly for cyclists or motorcyclists.

The point I want to stress is that there is a blind bend at the highest point of the sheer drop where it is simply not possible to see what is coming in the other direction. So far bollards have not been placed there.

I am amazed at the council’s response to this situation – ‘No incidents have been reported’ – as I have personally told them about the dangerous position I was put in by an overtaking car on that bend when out walking my dog. If I had lost my balance or my dog had bolted I’d have gone over the edge and would not have survived. This is made clear by the very detailed report commissioned by the Road Safety department. No-one could survive a fall from that height, whether in a car, walking, or on a bike or motorbike.

There should be danger signs at both ends, a speed limit, prohibition of HGV vehicles on that stretch of the road and, most importantly, a proper crash barrier along the entire cliffside..

Until these measures are put in place, the lane through Cwm Maethlon will remain extremely dangerous.

Yours etc,

Steve Rollins, Tywyn.
