CALLS are being stepped up for a controlled crossing at a “danger spot” in Machynlleth after a woman broke her hip when she was hit by a car.

Despite warnings over several years that crossing Pentrerhedyn Street is dangerous, the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency have found that the area — described as a “natural crossing point for pedestrians” — wasn’t suitable for a controlled crossing.

Sam Wheeler, who witnessed the incident last week when a Machynlleth woman suffered a broken hip, said it is “crazy” that the area doesn’t have a controlled crossing.

“I so wish that I had tried to do something about the lack of a crossing on Pentrerhedyn Street years ago,” he said.

“It’s seems crazy to me that, given that this is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in town, there is no safe place to cross.

“I frequently see people getting off buses and crossing straight behind them, not to mention all the kids coming from school, elderly people crossing to go to the chemist and shoppers on a busy Wednesday.

“In my mind there is a simple solution. Either traffic lights in all directions at the clock — therefore also solving the problem with the dangerous junction for cars turning right at the clock — or simply a zebra crossing somewhere between the clock and the leisure centre.”
