Madam,

In response to Ray Blackburne and K Davies (Are many residents affected by traffic? and Who will provide day care facilities?).

Regarding the old day centre in Park Avenue, Aberystwyth, it’s gone. As a result of a public event at Tregaron in December last year, I have over the last few weeks, using appropriate channels, been trying to establish the fact regarding the future of day centre facilities for the elderly, currently based at Bryntirion.

We have in Aberystwyth a day centre in the basement of the old town hall which is not a like-for-like alternative to what was a purpose-built day centre in Park Avenue.

The day centre at Hafan y Waun has closed. The day centre for a few adults with learning difficulties at Canolfan Padarn Llanbadarn is vulnerable. The day centre at London House in Aberaeron is closed.

All these centres prevent loneliness, provide respite, encourage activities etc.

As Mr Davies said: “Who will provide day centre facilities?”

The Park Avenue/Mill Street development led to the destruction of the day centre and the Drill Hall.

In May there will be county council elections. I hope the next councillors elected will consider whether it is acceptable that senior citizens with physical and mental issues find themselves alone at home in Ceredigion.

Is it acceptable that two years after the consultation on to the future of Bodlondeb, that there are up to 40 empty bedrooms? It was also used for day care.

I will never accept that Tesco and M&S should have been prioritised by Ceredigion county council at the expense of so many services in Park Avenue.

At present it is the responsibility of Ceredigion County Council to provide social services which should include day centres and care homes.

Yours etc,

Dai Thomas, Llwyn yr Eos, Penparcau, Aberystwyth.
