A COMMUNITY has raised over £80,000 in just a matter of weeks in order to buy the village pub.

The Tafarn yr Heliwr/Sportsman committee in Nefyn has been collecting money by selling individual shares in a new community venture at £50 apiece, raising a whopping £82,000.

The shareholder will then control a stake in a now-defunct pub which the committee hopes to resurrect into a ‘hub’ where people can meet, eat, drink, conduct meetings, and possibly even sleep.

The decision to buy the old pub, which has an asking price of £110,000, was made to try and reinvigorate Nefyn as the town had lost several public assets and businesses in recent years gone by.

Bleddyn Evans, chair of the committee, was thrilled with the amount raised and grateful to everybody who bought into the idea.

“The committee are overwhelmed that we managed to raise £82,000 in community shares in two months,” said Bleddyn.

“Sourcing grants to help with the purchase has been challenging, as funders need to see that groups have ownership of the building first, so we have been totally dependant on the community to buy shares.

“We are thankful to everyone that has supported!”

The committee is now negotiating with the relevant bodies before announcing their next step.
