An Aberdyfi toilet has been twinned with one in Malawi to give people there access to basic facilities and clean water.

Good sanitation and clean drinking water are things we all take for granted, but for one in four people worldwide this is not the case.

The charity Toilet Twinning is helping to remedy this situation by funding projects in poor communities to help families build basic toilets and to give them access to clean water and learn about hygiene, which can be lifesaving.

Thanks to the English Chapel and The Sweet Shop in Aberdyfi, the ladies’ toilet in the Aberdyfi Literary Institute has now been twinned with a loo in Malawi.

Simon Morgan, leader of the English Chapel in Aberdyfi, said: “For the last three summers The Sweet Shop has provided us with their lovely homemade ice cream for our August ice cream Sunday services where we offer ice cream to everyone at the end of the service.

“Angela Knox from The Sweet Shop declined to accept any money in return but suggested we give a sum to charity instead.”

“We decided to make a donation on her behalf to Toilet Twinning.

“We already have a toilet in the English Chapel that is twinned with one in Africa so we approached the Aberdyfi Literary Institute to twin their ladies’ lavatory with one in Africa too.”

He added: “We now have the certificate to show that the Literary Institute ladies’ lavatory is officially twinned with one at Mtonga Village, Salima District, Central Region, Malawi.

“We are delighted that the Literary Institute wanted to be part of this great charity and of course are so grateful to The Sweet Shop for allowing us to enjoy their ice cream as part of our Sunday services.”

“Toilet Twinning is part of Tearfund, the well-known UK Christian relief and development agency.

“Its primary focus is supporting those in poverty and providing disaster relief for disadvantaged communities – regardless of race or religious affiliation.

“Anyone can twin their own toilet with one in any one of over 30 countries.

“It’s a wonderful way to make a real difference. I would encourage people to look at www.toilettwinning.org to find out more details.”
