Madam,

The Prime Minister has called an election at a time to suit the Government. This was always the case until the Conservative-Liberal coalition brought in fixed-term parliaments. Theresa May needs a definite mandate to deal with Brexit considering the continuation of project fear by EU bureaucrats and some of our own politicians. Who really wants to be part of an organisation that is inefficient and wasteful whose annual accounts haven’t been signed off for nearly a generation?

A total of 18,031 (45.4 per cent) of voters in Ceredigion voted to leave the EU. In the forthcoming election, these voters need an escape route. Both of the main contenders are ‘Remain’-supporting parties, especially the Lib Dems who are demanding a second referendum.

There is only one party that is 100 per cent Brexit, UKIP. Although UKIP will not take Ceredigion, voting for them would send a message to whoever wins. Of course, if everyone who voted Brexit voted UKIP, they would have an MP! That would be a turn-up for the books.

I would like to know if Mark Williams agrees with his party leader that cannabis should be legalised? This has to be one of the most idiotic and ill-thought-out policies. I suggest that the Lib Dem hierarchy takes a look at NHS websites on drugs. As far as irresponsibility goes this policy from the Lib Dem party has to take the biscuit. At the moment we have cigarette packets, all with the same design, with pictures of the damage tobacco can cause. No doubt in the not too distant future there will be photos on packets showing people with mental health problems caused by cannabis smoking.

As far as Plaid Cymru is concerned, leader Leanne Wood – who tries to emulate her colleague in Scotland – wants to have a debate for Welsh Independence. Whenever I hear Leanne Wood or Nicola Sturgeon talking about breaking up the UK, it seems more about their dislike for England (and the cruel Tories) rather than about the prosperity of their own countries.

Yours etc,

Chris Samuel, William Street, Aberystwyth.
