A LLANILAR couple’s “friendly” pet dog is lucky to be alive after they believe she was speared through the chest with a plastic sword on Hallowe’en.

Valerie and Daryl Fletcher’s six-year-old springer spaniel Buzz is recovering at home after undergoing emergency veterinary surgery to remove the blade last Wednesday.

But police are still working on the possibility the dog was injured by a car and it was pierced by a piece of car bumper.

Speaking to the Cambrian News last week, Mrs Fletcher said that Buzz must have been spooked by fireworks and escaped.

But to her horror, university librarian Mrs Fletcher said Buzz returned home around 15 minutes later with a plastic blade which had entered and exited the chest just above his left shoulder.

Police are now investigating after Mrs Fletcher alleged that her dog had been speared intentionally by a “sick” individual.

“I feel people should know about what’s happened,” said Mrs Fletcher, whose husband Daryl, a lecturer, was away at the time of the incident.

“The dog got out — there were a lot of fireworks in the village. He was only out for 15 minutes.

“Someone has put a plastic sword through his chest in the village. The vet is operating on him now.

“The vet was absolutely appalled. Buzz was in a lot of pain and was bleeding.

“It must have taken quite a bit of force. He is a working dog and has a thick coat.”
