St Mary’s Women’s Fellowship Dolgellau

OUR speaker on 6 June was Reverend Martin Charles, who opened with The Lord’s Prayer. His subject ‘How God works through the event’.Reverend Charles then went on to discuss the story of Ruth. A story of two widows, Naomi a Jew and her daughter-in-law Ruth a Moabite woman. Naomi and her husband Elimelech lived in Bethlehem during a time of great deprivation. They decided to move to Moab to find a better life. They had two sons Mahlon and Chilion both who married Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah. Elimelech and his two sons tragically died. Naomi felt this was God’s curse knowing she should never have left her homeland, which she felt was contrary to God’s Law. She renamed herself Mara (curse of God), and decided to move back to Bethlehem. She intended to leave her daughter-in-laws behind in Moab, but they insisted on accompanying her to the border. When they reached the border Orpah reluctantly returned home but Ruth clung to Naomi and said (Ruth 1 – 16 ) ‘For wherever you go, I will go’. A brave statement as she knew as a Moabite woman she was unlikely to be accepted in Bethlehem. When they reach Bethlehem, they needed a way to sustain themselves , therefore Ruth needed employment, she started work for a distant male relative, Boaz. They eventually fell in love and married. We then fast forward to the New Testament, St Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 1. There we find the genealogy of Jesus. Verse 5-6. ‘ Boaz begot Obed by Ruth , Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David the king’ .David, of course being, in the direct lineage of Jesus. Again God working through the event for the good.We all can create our own sufferings, just as Naomi did, but God works through our sufferings. He works through our pain, through our many dark days, that hold back the goodness of God. We must remember God is in control.‘In my Father’s house there are many resting places’ John 14.2.Pat gave a heartfelt vote of thanks. Thank you again Rev Charles , we look forward to seeing you again next year.Glen won the raffle this week.
