AN ABERDYFI photographer has raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research by running in the London Marathon.

Doris O’Keefe managed to complete the race despite losing her mother the week before the event.

Doris said: “Like many other families my family has been affected by cancer so I was delighted to be able to run for Cancer Research UK when I got my chance to take part in the London Marathon.

“I have been trying for six years so was thrilled when I won my place through the ballot at my local running club, Bro Dysynni Athletics Club.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to everyone who has sponsored me and supported me through the long months of training.

“Like everyone else who was training for the marathon I battled against the cold, strong winds and snowy and icy conditions throughout the winter months on my many training runs so when the day arrived in London none of us had prepared for the extreme heat!

“However, it was the same for all of us and I knew if I wanted to finish, like most of the other 41,000 runners taking part, I would have to adapt my plans.

“The crowds were fantastic and really kept everyone going. There were plenty of showers along the route and I was pouring water over my head to keep cool most of the way round.

“There were firemen too, hosing everyone at various intervals which was wonderful!

“It was a fabulous and unforgettable experience and I was thrilled that my son Alex had come over from Australia to support me and I managed to see him at Tower Bridge and also Canary Wharf.

“It has been an emotional time for me as sadly my mother died the week before the marathon, but I wore her necklace the whole way round and felt that she was there with me too.

“So once again I’d like to give a sincere thank you to all my family and friends for supporting me throughout and I am thrilled that together we have managed to raise over £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.”

Doris is still hoping for donations towards Cancer Research.
