A student from Barmouth has been using her artistic skills to give her college a new look.

Glynllifon branding has received a make-over with modern logos designed by Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s very own art and design student, Alaw Evans.

Alaw’s design came first in the college-wide competition to create new branding for Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor campus, Glynllifon.

A second year student at Dolgellau, Alaw is studying a University of Arts London Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma.

In addition to using her design work as the official branding for the agricultural college in the future, Alaw was also awarded a £100 Amazon gift voucher for coming first.

Joint runners up were Alaw Wood and Jasmine Jones, who also won vouchers for their hard work.

Students were presented with the task of designing the new branding for CMD’s agricultural site, which would be included on any produce made there in the future. Glynllifon has made some artisan products in the past, such as sausages and paté.

Alaw’s design includes a dramatic silhouette of the unique archway found at Glynllifon’s entrance. It’s an iconic symbol that the judges at the college agreed would look very professional and is instantly recognisable as Glynllifon.

Commenting on the experience, Alaw said: “I’ve always been interested in graphic design, which is why I chose to study on this course at Dolgellau. The course has broadened my interest in the subject and I’ve found so many other areas of art and design that interest me now.

“This is my second success in graphic design on this course as I came first in a competition last year to design the end of year art and design exhibition poster, so winning this competition as well has definitely made me seriously consider pursuing graphic design in university and the future.

“There’s constant support on the course which, I think, is why I feel so comfortable trying new things and experimenting with techniques. Even if it doesn’t always go the way I want, the experience is there.”

Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor principal Aled Jones Griffith was delighted with the work produced by all the students, in particular the three students who came first and joint second.

He said: “The work produced by these students is exceptional, and could be mistaken for professional designs from an agency. It’s fantastic that we have such talented individuals studying with us, and we want to continue encouraging them to realise their potential and achieve the best results possible.”
