THE CLOSURE of four primary schools in the Cardigan district will be among options that will be considered by Ceredigion county councillors tomorrow (Thursday).

Members of the scrutiny committee will be looking at proposals to replace Beulah, Cenarth, Trewen and Llechryd primaries with one area school on the most suitable of the four existing sites or alternately at a new location.

The proposal is part of a Review of Primary Educational Provision in the Cardigan Area examining all seven Welsh-medium schools locally.

Welsh education secretary Kirsty Williams has said that school closures would be a ‘last resort’ and the Cambrian News understands that any such move would not happen within the next two years.

But Beulah-based county councillor Lyndon Lloyd expressed sadness at the uncertainly of the village school’s future just weeks after it celebrated its 100th anniversary.

“I’m particularly sad about Beulah, although we’re down to 17 pupils there is a Grwp Meithrin which I will argue suggests that there’s still a future for this school,” he said.
