An extension for a specialist education centre in Aberaeron is needed, but there’s also a desperate need for an extension at Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron, a local councillor has insisted.

Cllr Elizabeth Evans said while she was happy that plans for an extension at Canolfan y Môr at the town’s secondary chool had been pushed forward in the council’s priorities for grant funding, she said there was “deep frustration” that extension plans for the primary school had again been overlooked.

Council leader Ellen ap Gwynn had said plans had “been on the horizon” for the extension at Canolfan y Môr and that the authority wanted to move it to a higher band in the process for getting Welsh Government 21st Century Schools funding.

Cllr ap Gwynn said that would mean that the scheme could proceed sooner than initially planned because of an increase in the funding available.

But while Cllr Evans backed that move, she said there was still a desperate need at the primary school.

She said: “I am fully supportive of the proposed extension to Canolfan y Môr, with growing numbers it is clear that more room is needed.

“Regarding the council’s applications for Welsh Government funding under Band B of 21st Century Schools, the fact that plans for a much-needed and long-overdue extension for Aberaeron Primary School is again omitted from any funding application continues to be a source of deep frustration for parents and teachers.

“I have again written to the strategic director, Barry Rees, asking for a strategy for the school.

“It is cramped and badly in need of an extension.

“Our pupils and teachers deserve better.”
