Plans for a new school building in Machynlleth have been hit with further delays.

The planning application for the new Ysgol Bro Hyddgen building has been withdrawn, and new plans are not expected to be lodged until later in 2020.

Powys County Council admitted there will be a delay in the new school building opening, saying that the collapse of contractor Dawnus had forced the withdrawal of the current plan and the need to produce a new planning application.

Work had been due to start on the new £23m school building in April 2019, but that proved impossible after Dawnus, the contractor which had drawn up the plans, went into administration.

Local councillor Michael Williams said the current situation was leading to growing frustration amongst local residents.

A council spokesperson said the authority was still committed to providing a new school building in Machynlleth and that while the collapse of Dawnus had delayed matters, it would not see the scheme collapse.

The spokesperson said the school opening date will change, but could not give a new opening date.
