Fears have been expressed over potential job losses at a university in Lampeter.

A source told the Cambrian News that staff had received letters stating that a number of posts would be axed, amid reports of falling numbers of students.

Confirming a review of current structures, a University of Wales Trinity Saint David spokesperson said it would include general staffing levels “in order to ensure that they are more closely aligned with sector norms”.

“The university’s current core staffing costs equate to approximately 70 per cent of revenue,” she added.

“The restructuring is aimed at reducing this cost to be closer in line with the Welsh sector norm of 55 per cent.”

The review will also encompass the academic structure across all campuses and centres as well as the curriculum and number of programmes and modules offered.

“These proposals have the potential to reduce operating costs by £6.5 million ensuring that the university has the flexibility and resilience to make a significant contribution to the future economic, cultural and civic mission of Wales,” she said.
