A LOLLIPOP person is being brought back to a Porthmadog school - for the first time in 10 years - following a safety campaign.

The lollipop person will help pupils at Ysgol Eifionydd cross a busy main road and get to and from school safely.

The provision of a lollipop service has been hotly debated in the Cambrian News’ over recent weeks.

The discussion was most recently brought to the fore in December when prospective county councillor Nia Jeffreys started a petition calling for a safe crossing outside the school, attracting nearly 150 online signatories.

Mrs Jeffreys said the council has now decided to advertise for a new lollipop person at the school.

The post was never refilled after the last one retired.

“This really is a win for people power. Without the petition the assessment would not have happened,” said Mrs Jeffreys after handing the petition to Ysgol Eifionydd headteacher Dewi Bowen.

“Within two days of starting the petition over 100 people had signed it.

“The strength of feeling in the town about the dangers outside the school was very strong.”

Gwynedd county councillor Jason Humphreys added: “After being told some months ago that Ysgol Eifionydd didn’t qualify for a school crossing lollipop service by Gwynedd Council, I’m relieved to have learned that the council has now relented”.
