YSGOL Penweddig, Aberystwyth, pupils have been praised for their initiative following the entry of seven teams in a national entrepreneurial competition.
The Aberystwyth secondary school has seen seven teams from two different age groups compete in the Tenner Challenge, a UK-wide competition which sees pupils start a business from scratch with only £10.
The seven teams include The Bee’s Knees, which, after featuring in the Cambrian News last week, have finished third in the whole of the UK in the competition’s ‘Sale’s Pitch’ last week.
Teams from the school competing in the 11-14 age group include: ‘A-Goriad’ (Ifan Davies and Euros Williams) – selling personalised laser cut key rings; ‘Snapshot’ (Cayla Kelsey and Rhys Bishop) – selling photographs they have taken of local wildlife; ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ (Elin Rees, Willow Meaney, Shannon Haird, Morgan Birch, Megan Ystwyth) – holding a film/TV club during lunch time; ‘WDM’ (Tom Williams, Owen Evans, Richy Ricketts, Aled Phillips, Jac Griffiths) – holding sporting activities for Year 7 to 9 pupils during the lunch break including table tennis, five-a-side football, and dodgeball; ‘Cool Creators’ (Ioan Morris, Joseff Hughes, Tom Backshall-Kennedy) – holding a board games club during lunch breaks and selling homemade Mother’s Day cards.
And joining The Bee’s Knee’s in the 15-19 age group are ‘Hwdi-ni’ (Morgan Shaw, Rhodri Davies, Dylan Tudor, Steffan Evans), who are selling personalised hoodies in the colours of the school houses.
Jane Richards, leader of business and enterprise at Penweddig, said: “They have all shown initiative in setting up their business and are developing excellent communication and team working skills.
“They are also developing excellent numeracy skills as they have to keep track of all costs and revenue.”
