AN Aberystwyth University lecturer has been honoured for his work in promoting mathematics through the medium of Welsh.

Dr Tudur Davies, a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, was presented with the Eilir Hedd Morgan Memorial Prize by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at its annual congregation on Wednesday, 6 March.

The award is given to scientists under 40 years of age who have made a valuable contribution to the world of research and promoted the sciences through the medium of Welsh within the higher education sector.

Dr Davies graduated in mathematics from Aberystwyth University in 2005 and completed a Masters in complex fluid in 2006.

He was awarded a PhD in 2010 for his research on the modelling of interaction between liquid foams and solid objects using numerical simulations.

He then worked as research assistant on the Wales Institute of Visual Computing.

Dr Davies said: “I am honored to receive this award from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, an organization that has given me great opportunities in my academic career.

“It’s a pleasure to work with students who are enthusiastic about studying mathematics through the medium of Welsh and to play a small part in the provision of the subject at a higher education level.”

Prof Simon Cox, head of the department, said: “This is a well-deserved recognition of the huge amount of work that Tudur does to promote mathematics in the Welsh language.

“He is fundamental to the department’s teaching provision through the medium of Welsh, and is a great ambassador for the department in schools and colleges around the country.”
