A NEWLY retired Aberystwyth headteacher has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s honours list.

Menna Sweeney, who retired as headteacher of Ysgol Plascrug, Aberystwyth, at the end of the autumn term after 39 years at the school, has been given an MBE for services to education in Wales.

Plascrug prides itself on its multiculturalism, with 38 countries being represented at the school.

Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson said: "Teachers, foster carers and all those who work with young people have a truly life changing impact, and I congratulate all who have received an award in the New Year’s Honours List."
