All pupils at an Aberystwyth secondary school are back in class this week following a Covid scare - but 35 pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron are still self-isolating.

Pupils at secondary schools at Ysgol Gyfun Penglais in Aberystwyth and Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron were sent home to self-isolate after positive coronavirus tests last week.

Giving an update on the situation in both schools, a Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: "Following a negative PCR test, no pupils are currently self-isolating at Ysgol Penglais.

"35 pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron will continue to self-isolate until 7 May."

Ceredigion council confirmed on Friday that groups of students at Ysgol Penglais and Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron had been sent home after a positive test at each school.

The 35 pupils self-isolating from Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron will be taught remotely for this period.

The council said that it continues to urge “all parents to refer their children for a test if they develop any of the symptoms, which are a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste.”

“Parents should also be aware of other symptoms early on, such as headaches, tiredness and general aches and pains usually associated with the flu,” the council added.

“Although the level of cases [in the county] is currently low, coronavirus has not gone away,” the council warned.
