A VILLAGE school near Lampeter, which has been earmarked for closure, has received the thumbs-up from inspectors in its last ever Estyn report.

Ysgol Llanwnnen will close in January 2017 as it merges with Cwrtnewydd and Llanwenog schools to form a new area school set to open in Drefach.

The 33-pupil school’s final inspection report saw inspectors rate the school as ‘good’ for both current performance and prospects for improvement despite its imminent closure.

Estyn inspectors, during a visit in November, found that the school represented “good value for money” despite Ceredigion council’s decision to cloes it and amalgamate it into the larger school set to cost over £4m to build.

The report of the inspection at Llanwnnen, released this week said the school’s current performance was good – the second highest rung in the inspectors’ ranking ladder – because “most pupils make good progress during their time there”; “most pupils listen attentively and communicate well orally”; “pupils present work clearly, using neat handwriting”; “most pupils show great pride in their work”; “the quality of teaching is good”; and “the behaviour of nearly all pupils is very good.”
