A SCHOOL shake-up in the Aeron Valley is still being considered by county councillors even though no decision can be made before next year’s elections.

Despite uncertainty over funding, Ceredigion Cabinet members have been considering closing four current schools - Ciliau Parc, Cilcennin, Felinfach and Dihewyd - and creating an area school.

But the idea has been put on hold after Cllr Hag Harris, the council’s education Cabinet member, said the council would not be able to consult on an area school before the 2017 council elections.

He added that there was also uncertainty over what Welsh Government funding would be available and how much money the council would need to provide itself.

Local councillors said they were pleased that no formal decision would be made.

They say that forming an area school using current buildings at Felinfach’s Professional Education Centre campus would be opposed by residents who would only be prepared to accept an area school if it was a new building.

Cllr Harris insisted the council must make difficult decisions now or face not providing the best education possible for youngsters and just delaying school closures.
