Schools in Ceredigion were treated to an impressive BMX bike display from Matti Hemmings, a professional BMX rider who travels the world demonstrating his amazing talent on a bike.

The chosen schools who got a chance to experience Matti’s talents on Thursday, 20 June, included Craig-yr Wylfa, St Padarns, Aberporth and Llechryd.

The schools were all chosen because of their outstanding performance in the Sustrans Big Pedal challenge.

Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking and scooting challenge. It inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose human power for their journey to school.

A record 3.8 million journeys were logged during Big Pedal 2019.

Sioned Lewis, Sustrans Cymru school officer, said: “The pupils thoroughly deserved this fantastic prize as reward for their brilliant work over the Big Pedal challenge.

“Matti’s demonstration was incredible to see, some of the stunts were unbelievable.

“It was lovely to see the pupils having such a good time and I’m sure this will serve as an incentive to do even better in the Big Pedal next year.”

The events were sponsored by Ceredigion County Council.

Alun Williams, Ceredigion council’s sustainability champion, said: “Sustrans do a wonderful job of encouraging children to cycle, scoot and walk to school and Ceredigion council are proud to invite them into our local schools."

Mr Williams added: “The BMX demo sessions are thoroughly enjoyed by our pupils and are a fitting reward for all their hard work during the Big Pedal.”
