FIFTEEN Ceredigion primary schools have been rated in the top band of a controversial Welsh Government rankings system.

The results of the 2015 National School Categorisation System, published this week, saw Ceredigion’s overall performance in the primary sector improve.

Under the system there are four categories — green, yellow, amber and red.

Schools in the green category are already doing well and are deemed to be in need of the least support while schools in the red category are those identified as needing the most support.

Only Llanon Primary School, which has been without a headteacher since September, slipped into the red category among all schools in Ceredigion.

Education chiefs said work with the school would continue.

Top performing primary schools in Ceredigion, rated in the top green band for achievement against targets, are those in Ciliau Parc; Talgarreg; Ysgol Gymraeg (Aberystwyth); Comins Coch; Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn; Llanilar; Mynach; Llechryd; Cwrtnewydd; Llanwnnen; Llandysul; Plascrug (Aberystwyth); Ysgol y Dderi (Llangybi); Cardigan; and Llanwenog.

There was no improvement among county secondary schools, with none in the red nor green categories and all seven schools remaining in the yellow or amber categories for the second year running.
