DOZENS of lecturers at Aberystwyth University face an uncertain future as the institution embarks on another job-shedding exercise in a bid to cut mounting losses.

Up to eight of 30 staff at the world-renowned international politics department will “in all likelihood” be lost “in the coming months”, a letter sent to students just days before Christmas by department head Prof Richard Beardsworth said.

The international politics department - which is ranked in the top 40 in the world for academic reputation and the top 10 in the UK for teaching quality - will not be the only one facing further cuts under the university’s Strategic Implementation Plan (2017-2019), with those job losses set to be mirrored at the history department and more cuts to follow, the Cambrian News understands.

The further losses follow 40 posts already having been cut through the university’s voluntary severance this year.

The Cambrian News also understands that lower paid support staff face uncertainty, with dozens of posts put at risk of redundancy for the new year.
