A YOUTH has been arrested after an attempt was made to stab a teacher with a bread knife.

An “investigation” of health and safety procedures has also been launched at the Pupil Referral Unit in Aberaeron.

Staff at the unit were left “shaken” by the incident, with one staff member saying that fears over security at the unit had been raised with Ceredigion council prior to the attack on the afternoon of Thursday, 4 February.

A police investigation, alongside an independent investigation by Ceredigion council, has been launched following the attack - described by the council as an “unfortunate incident”.

No-one was injured in the incident at the unit, which supports “vulnerable” pupils from around the county.

One staff member, who wants to remain anonymous, said that staff have brought up concerns over a lack of staffing numbers compared to the number of children at the unit, and said staff have been asking for additional security measures to be put in place after several less serious incidents.

Ceredigion council said that “additional health and safety procedures have been implemented to ensure that the risk has been significantly reduced”.
