A RETIRED Lampeter police constable has recalled how he was the first officer on the scene of a notorious Llanddewi Brefi murder which was the subject of this week’s S4C documentary series Y Ditectif.
The murder of 61-year-old John ’Brynambor’ Williams shocked the small, close-knit community in January 1983.
The shy and quiet farmer was shot dead by crazed killer Richard Gambrell at his isolated home and Dai Evans, 71, of Falcondale Drive, remembers the horrific episode more vividly than most.
“It was a Sunday evening and I’d started work that day at 5pm,” he told the Cambrian News.
“My mate and I were called up there almost immediately and it was still light when we arrived at John’s isolated bungalow.
“We were told there had been no answer at the house and friends and family thought we’d better check up on him.
“We went up there with a doctor – from Tregaron, I think – expecting to find there had been a natural death.
“What we saw when we looked through the window told us this death was far from natural."
