FARMING charity RABI has received a sizeable donation of £670 in memory of a man who worked hard to raise money for the charity as part of their Ceredigion committee.

Mervyn Smith’s widow Fernleigh, a former secretary and a current member of Ceredigion’s RABI committee, presented a cheque to current committee chair Euros Davies at a recent bingo fundraiser at the Ffostrasol Arms in Llandysul.

Mervyn, a stalwart of RABI’s Ceredigion committee, passed away recently and the family requested donations in lieu of flowers. In total, £1,340 was collected and split equally between RABI and Plas Cwmcynfelin Care Home.

Euros Davies said: “On behalf of the committee I would like to thank Fernleigh and her family for thinking of us at this difficult time and for presenting us with such a significant sum of money.”

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution is a welfare charity which assists farming people of all ages in financial difficulty. During 2017, RABI gave out more than £42,000 to families in Ceredigion. Much of RABI’s funding comes from events arranged by voluntary supporters, businesses and community groups.

The bingo night at the Ffostrasol Arms was organised by RABI’s Ceredigion committee and raised £384. In the final game a prize hamper was up for grabs, generously donated by Lyn Evans of St Dogmaels.
