A Lampeter dairy farmer has revealed he takes on average 15,000 steps a day, which equates to climbing Snowdon five times per week, to look after his herd.

Aled Vaughan-Jones is one of 2,400 Arla dairy farmers in the UK, who collectively power the dairy industry allowing the country to enjoy milk every day.

Aled, who has just turned 30, has been working on his farm for eight years, since graduating from Harper Adams.

Aled is out walking about the 260 hectare farm from 5.30am, looking after all of the 350 Holstein Friesians along with the young stock.

Aled said: “The day to day running of a farm and the upkeep of healthy and happy cows is a seven-day-a-week job, and can mean long hours but working as a team is the key.

“My daily tasks start with milking the cows in the morning and then can vary during the day from moving groups of cattle to fresh pasture to helping a cow give birth to fixing a water trough.

“I cover 15,000 on average a day which equates to around 800 calories. Therefore I really need to look after my body to keep my strength up throughout the day.

“I ensure I keep my energy levels up with a big bowl of cereals, four rounds of toast, a boiled egg and a cup of tea each morning. This is all after the cows have had their breakfast. It’s great to utilise the core product from our farm, as part of a healthy diet. I do also love ice cream as a treat after an evening meal!”
