An eight-year-old boy from Llanon raised over £100 for Alzheimer’s Society by cycling 100 miles in a month.

Jake Edwards cycled 100 miles during August to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Nick Edwards, Jake’s father, said: “Jake had his new bike on 7 August and we began the challenge a little later, on 9 August.

“He was really energetic and enthusiastic at the start. By the end he got a bit tired, but he still kept going.

“We managed to raise £135 so that was pretty good as well. I did a 300-mile challenge in April on my own and that was really difficult because I had to cycle around work.

“One day I said I needed to get back on my bike and he said ‘dad, when I get my new bike I want to do it with you’.

“This time I thought it would be good for him to get involved. It keeps him motivated as well, he could be sat at home on his computer playing Minecraft which is what most kids do at his age. It’s getting him outside and focused.”

He added: “We started by going from Llanon up towards Pennant, we did that twice but it was a real struggle for him because it was a real steep hill and the mileage we were getting out of it wasn’t great.

“Then we decided we would go to Aberarth, around Aberaeron and up and around Llanerchaeron. We then topped up the miles by cycling around Aberaeron and the campsite.

“We even went around the council office and cycled around the roundabout 15 times. Jake nearly fell off afterwards because he was so dizzy.”

Nick and Jake decided to take on the 100-mile challenge for Alzheimer’s Society after they found it on Strava.

They are now hoping to complete a similar challenge in October, but they are unsure for what charity.

“I did Cancer Research in April and raised £450. We haven’t really decided on a charity for October so I’m open to suggestions. If nothing else comes up, we’ll probably go for Alzheimer’s Society again.”
