FEARS that Aberystwyth’s Mill Street development could lead to traffic problems in the town centre have been played down by council chiefs.

New traffic lights are being installed on Park Avenue as part of the development of a new Tesco supermarket and Marks & Spencer store but, despite similar traffic lights leading to major congestion in Newtown, the council has claimed the changes could actually improve traffic flow in Aberystwyth town centre.

Local councillor Ceredig Davies said he was hopeful that improvements could be made, but said the impact would not be known until the new lights had been in place for a while.

There was a flood of complaints about tailbacks through Newtown after traffic lights were introduced to allow access to the town’s Tesco store.

But a council spokesperson has said that models have suggested that similar problems will not happen in Aberystwyth, where the current pedestrian crossing on Park Avenue will be removed and alternative lights introduced further down toward the entrance to the development.
