ABERYSTWYTH residents have criticised the county council over the “disgraceful” state of the town and claim it could deter tourists from returning in the future.
The news comes after senior figures in the tourism industry in north Wales warned local councils that tourists could choose not to return if they did not provide the basics such as clean streets and good public toilet facilities.
One resident, who wished not to be named, told the Cambrian News that recycling bins in the town, including in the castle grounds and outside the Morlan Cente on Queens Road, were overflowing, leaving broken glass on the floor.
“The recycling bins on the castle grounds have been overflowing for the past fortnight,” the resident said.
“They are located next to the busiest children’s playground in Aberystwyth, so not only do they produce a health and safety issue, but this is the main area for tourists to come and view the famous castle grounds and the old college. Is this really how we want to present our town?”
The council said that usage of the glass recycling bank in the castle grounds fluctuated depending on the weather.
