CONCERNS about the future of services at Machynlleth’s Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre have been raised after it emerged the centre’s café has been closed.
Machynlleth town councillors heard that the café had been closed by leisure centre operators Freedom Leisure and that the company was looking to provide vending machines instead.
But Cllr Rhydian Mason said that raised fears that other facilities at the leisure centre could be lost, after Powys council confirmed that an initial agreement meant that Freedom Leisure only had to retain services as they were for a year after taking over the running of the leisure centre.
Cllr Mason said: “It seems the café is shut. I’m trying to find out if it’s on a permanent basis and how it pertains to promises from Powys Council about the services that would be available.
“We were told when the company took over the leisure centre that there would be no loss of facilities and I say the cafe is a facility.”
In a letter to the council from the leisure centre’s manager, it was confirmed that the cafe has closed and that Freedom Leisure is currently out to tender for vending machines to be sited in the cafe, which is now being used as a waiting room with a view of the swimming pool.
