Plans have been submitted to build a new production unit at a Felinfach factory.

Arla Foods has submitted plans for the new building on a brownfield site at the former Volac site in the Aeron Valley.

The building will provide production space, associated staff office and laboratory space and new storage silos and tanks.

Work will also include upgrading/improvements to current drainage provision and the installation of a new pedestrian access bridge, spanning the proposed building and existing production areas.

Arla Foods held a public consultation on the plans in June with around 30 local residents attending.

In a report submitted to Ceredigion County Council planners, Arla Foods says: "The comments were overwhelmingly positive."

An initial survey of the site has concluded that the existing buildings have low suitability for bat roosting and showed evidence of use by birds for nesting, but further surveys should be carried out.

A small stream with connection to the Afon Aeron (priority River habitat) occurred on the site and that Himalayan balsam was noted in abundance just beyond the southern margin of the site.

Controls shall be implemented to avoid pollution of the watercourse and that demolition works shall be timed to avoid disturbing active bird nests and measures shall be taken to avoid spreading Himalayan Balsam off site.

Arla Foods acquired Volac two years ago and earlier this year also took over the running of neighbouring Sensient Flavors.

Speaking in March, The Danish company said in an announcement: “Part of its future plans for investment projects, the development of the site will ensure stronger operations and the capacity for future growth in the area.

“The investment also ensures business continuity for AFI, creating full control of critical infrastructure and utilities.”

Anne-Sophie Hoff, site director at AFI Felinfach, added: “Expanding our footprint alongside our existing facility will allow us to expand our processing capability and build a more robust operation for the future.

“This new milestone reflects the hard work of our team and the strong partnerships we’ve built locally, and we’re excited about the positive impact this expansion will have. We know how important sites like this are in the local community and this investment underscores our commitment to the area.”
