CYCLISTS from Aberystwyth have raised over £1,700 for Wales Air Ambulance to thank them for helping treat riders who were injured in a crash during a race in August.
Around 50 members of the Ystwyth Cycling Club rode the 113-mile route from Aberystwyth to Welshpool on Saturday, 8 October, to raise the cash.
The event was held after 10 cyclists were injured following a serious crash on the B4340 at around 12.30pm on Sunday, 14 August, at the annual Angela Davies Memorial Road Race, organised by Ystwyth Cycling Club.
Two of the cyclists — one of whom suffered a head injury, and another who suffered a pelvic injury — had to be airlifted to Morriston Hospital by separate air ambulances following the crash.
Richard Eakins, of Ystwyth Cycling Club said the Wales Air Ambulance’s “quick response” on the day had “potentially prevented any lasting damage”.
All the riders were released from hospital by the end of that week
Mr Eakins told the Cambrian News that the charity ride was “tough” but went “really well.”
“We left Cambrian Tyres with around 50 cyclists of all abilities and rode up to Mach before regrouping at the clock tower,” he said.
“Various people then went back home via Llanwrin or straight back from Mach and then 17 of us rode onto Welshpool to the air ambulance and presented a large cheque."
