FAIRBOURNE’S fight for a £100m compensation is still ongoing, residents have been assured.

Villagers are currently seeking millions of pounds worth of compensation after a controversial report recommended the evacuation of the village.

At a well-attended meeting earlier this year, residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of pursuing legal action over the controversial Shoreline Management Plan 2 (SMP2) which “blighted” the Fairbourne community by presenting “alarmist” information about the village’s immediate future.

Following the decision, residents and well wishers came together to fund-raise £20,000 to secure the services of a top legal professional.

Fairbourne Facing Change, a community group dedicated to safeguarding the village for as long as possible, will be meeting with their barrister, Tim Leader, imminently to plan how the community will progress in their negotiations.

In a recent newsletter, a representative of FFC wrote: “We are sure that you will appreciate that legal matters need to be treated in the absolute strictest of confidence.

“We plainly cannot make public items of information or advice which have been passed on to us from our environmental barrister in a publication such as this, which is available for all to read, for very obvious reasons.

“The FFC group are sure you will understand that this part of our work is extremely important, and needs to be handled diligently, and with extreme care and sensitivity.

“Please rest assured that work is quietly going on behind the scenes, and will continue to do so.

“We very much appreciate and understand the trust which the community has put in us to deal with this, and for that we thank you very much.”
