A campaign to save an Aberystwyth home for pensioners gained support this week from a local group set up to help the elderly.

Playwright Dr Lucy Gough is fighting for the future of Jasper House on Great Darkgate Street whose residents, including her 85-year-old mother, have been told they have just two months to find alternative accommodation.

Dr Gough alerted the Cambrian News to the plight of Jasper House’s four residents and appealed to the public to help her save the home.

Members of the North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care met with Dr Gough last Thursday and have offered their support.

Addressing the forum, Dr Gough said that the set-up of Jasper House was unique to Aberystwyth as it is the only supported accommodation for the elderly where they can come and go but also receive food and companionship, unlike a residential home. Speaking after the meeting, the forum’s chair, Mark Williams, said he hoped Jasper House could be saved.

“Our forum is delighted to support Lucy Gough in her efforts to save Jasper House and we urge the owners and operators, Abbeyfield Wales Society, to reconsider and allow extra time so that we may explore all alternatives to closure,” he said.

“Jasper House and Abbeyfield have a long held and impressive record in the field of independent living. We have long-argued the case for a range of choices for elderly people and Jasper House is part of that mix.”

Dr Gough announced her intention to establish the ‘Friends of Jasper House’ and, as a show of support, the forum gathered with her at the home on Saturday.
