World-renowned Aberystwyth actor Taron Egerton is encouraging his fans to donate to the “inspiring” work of a charity that serves rural Mid Wales.

The Care Society is a rural Mid Wales service aimed at preventing people from becoming socially excluded by reason or unsettled circumstance, homelessness, at risk of losing their home or living inadequate accommodation.

On his Twitter page, Taron shared a message of support for the Care Society and encouraged his fans to donate to the charity, which has seen an increase in demand due to the coronavirus crisis.

In the video, published on Tuesday, Taron said: “As we all know the recent coronavirus pandemic has meant that social isolation and staying at home have become a necessity.

“And this can be a really difficult, lonely experience for many people. I can only imagine how much harder this is for people who rely on support for whatever reason or circumstance.

“The good news is there are charities and people who are there to help. I am very, very proud that in my part of the world, Mid Wales, the Care Society, or Cymdeithas Gofal in Welsh, are doing a great deal to support the local community and the people in it.

“That’s why I am supporting their fundraising campaign to ensure their inspiring work can work.”

Guy Evans, executive director at the Care Society, said: “We’re very lucky to have this support.

“It’s the anniversary of the Rocketman film this weekend, and their will be a Rocketman Watchathon which is an opportunity for us to showcase the work of the Care Society and mid Wales more generally globally.

“Taron is raising awareness and putting the Care Society on the map as a Mid Wales charity as well as raising awareness of the issues. It’s been amazing.”

“I am a local boy; I like the idea that there is a charity out there that is in this area for this area. It gives me pride in the community and give the community a sense of pride.

“We’ve been working with partner agencies, local authorities, the police. So for example, for homelessness we’re working strategically with the local authorities, Tai Ceredigion and the Wallich, trying to provide extra homelessness provisions.”

Guy also gave a special mention to the “heroic” team at the Care Society: “It’s been tough. They are putting themselves on the frontline to help people, I am just amazed.”

From 23 March to 24 April, the Care Society made 2,970 telephone calls, texts, or emails of support, completed 89 additional warden hours per week, delivered 64 emergency food parcels, completed 101 food runs, helped 26 people help temporary emergency accommodation, and more.
