FIVE local people are to be inducted into the Gorsedd of the Bards at this year’s National Eisteddfod, organisers have confirmed.
The names of those to be honoured by the Gorsedd of the Bards at the Monmouthshire and District National Eisteddfod, have been announced today, Thursday.
These honours, presented annually, are an opportunity to recognise individuals from all parts of the country for their achievements and their commitment to Wales, the Welsh language and to their local communities across the whole of Wales.
In line with the Gorsedd of the Bards’ arrangements for honouring new members, all new members enter the Gorsedd on the same level, irrespective of whether they are honoured into the Blue or Green robes.
Those who have succeeded in the fields of law, science, sports and media become honorary druids and receive blue robes for their services to the nation.
Recipients of the blue robes include Emyr Wyn Jones, Rhos y Gwaliau, Bala, who was well-known as president of the Farmers’ Union of Wales between 2011-15; Liz Saville Roberts, MP for Dwyfor and Meirionnydd, for becoming Plaid Cymru’s first female member in Westminster and promoting the Welsh language and Sue Roberts, Pwllheli, who has tirelessly offered opportunities to children and young people to use Welsh in church activities, as well as organising all kinds of events over the years.
The Gorsedd also honours new members to the green robes for their contribution to the arts. Jennifer Eynon, originally from Criccieth, has been recognised as one of the “pillars of the Welsh language and cultural community in the area”.
