FLOOD protection work near a Llanbadarn Fawr housing estate should finally begin after Natural Resources Wales received permission for the scheme to go ahead.

Talks have been ongoing since floods devastated homes at Parc yr Onnen in 2012.

Ceredigion County Council granted NRW permission to carry on with work, but issues with Network Rail have been holding up the work.

Now an agreement has been struck between the bodies and Ceredigion council’s Cabinet has given NRW delegated powers to carry out the flood protection work.

Local councillor Gareth Davies said he was pleased to see progress was finally being made after he was told by NRW in July that consultants were working on getting the scheme ready for work.

He said: “I am obviously delighted that Cabinet has agreed to give NRW permission to proceed with the flood defence scheme for Parc yr Onnen.

“The residents of Parc yr Onnen have been waiting since the flooding in June 2012 for a flood defence scheme to be put in place and have experienced many frustrations along the way.

“We were initially told the scheme would be in place within six months but this didn’t happen due to various problems, including difficulty getting landowner permissions and the death of one landowner.

“I sincerely hope that this scheme succeeds to give the residents peace of mind that steps have been taken to reduce the risk of any further flooding similar to that experienced in 2012.”
