FLY-TIPPED rubbish has been “piling up” in the Plas grounds in Machynlleth because of the axing of the town’s recycling centre last year, councillors have said.

Machynlleth town councillors warned that the closure of the Potters Yard recycling centre in January 2015 would lead to an increase in fly-tipping. Now it has been reported that the issue has “increased considerably” over the past few months - leading to calls to “name and shame” the culprits.

Councillors heard at their meeting on Monday that rubbish has been “piling up” in parts of the grounds of Y Plas.

At a Machynlleth town council meeting on Monday, councillors warned that fly-tipping in the town, and on the grounds of Y Plas, was “getting out of hand” and something “needed to be done”.

Cllr Gareth Jones said: “Fly-tipping within the grounds of Y Plas has increased considerably over the last few months. I believe this to be a direct consequence of the closure of Potters last year. It is a situation that needs to be looked at, it has having an effect on the town.

“We warned this could happen.”

After the meeting, Cllr Jones added: “People think that dumping rubbish at Y Plas is Powys council’s responsibility, but it’s not. We, the town council, have to pay to have it cleared.”
