My sister-in-law forwarded to me Alexandra Bánfi’s article to me some weeks ago about a lady who was evacuated to Borth. It brought back such very fond memories for me as my mum and her very young son (my brother) were evacuated to Borth around 1939.

I know it was around this date as recently I found them during the 1939 registration in Dol-y-Bont with the family who sheltered them initially. Mum eventually rented a small fisherman’s cottage in Borth and when dad returned from war time service they decided to stay.

I was born in 1946 in Aberystwyth and I now consider myself very fortunate to have been raised in the village.

My husband and I eventually left the village in the early 1970s when we moved for work reasons and house prices, to Lancashire. We both worked in Aberystwyth. My dad did all kinds of work when he left the Forces post-war to keep us fed, labouring on a local farm, sweeping chimneys, caretaking local holiday homes, mowing lawns, painting caravans etc; even travelling with a national building company who each year erected the Eisteddfod site. Mum did all kinds of cleaning work in local homes and hostelries, ending her working life as a dinner lady in Borth CP School.

Yes, a great upbringing - I was very fortunate.
